ENGL 5250: Research and Teaching of Second Language Pronunciation

Resource

Case Study

Dr. Agata Guskaroska serves as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Iowa State University, where she earned her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics and Technology. Her teaching background includes EFL/ESL instruction, oral communication, composition, and online education, including a MOOC on technology in language teaching. She has authored Oral Communication for Non-Native Speakers of English 2nd Edition, Teaching Pronunciation with Confidence, and co-edited the 12th Proceedings of the Pronunciation in Second Language Learning and Teaching (PSLLT) conference. Her research explores computer-assisted language learning, pronunciation teaching, and technology use in language education.

With support from a 2023/2024 Miller Open Education Mini-Grant, Dr. Guskaroska developed an open educational resource (OER) for English pronunciation instruction titled Teaching Pronunciation with Confidence. This project aims to provide free, research-based materials for language teachers and learners worldwide. The OER covers key pronunciation topics including English sounds, stress, intonation, rhythm, prominence, connected speech, and pronunciation assessment. It includes created and adapted pronunciation teaching materials collected by Dr. John Levis into a structured learning resource.

What distinguishes this resource is its integration of interactive H5P activities and audio examples that transform theoretical concepts into practical learning experiences. Unlike traditional pronunciation materials, this OER combines accessibility with interactivity, allowing users to engage with content through applied practice. The project addresses the critical need for quality pronunciation instruction globally, particularly in regions with limited resources.
