RESEV 5520: Basic Educational Statistics
Resources
Case Study
The Basic Educational Statistics is a required course for education PhD students and fulfills the statistical training requirements for many majors. It provides and introduction to concepts foundational to statistics and quantitative research.
Statistics textbooks often cost between $50-$150. I decided to adopt OpenIntro Statistics, which is a free digital textbook with a print option. The book comes with a full suite of supports for students, such as video discussions of each chapter.
I also adopted R as the core statistical program for the course. R is a full-featured, free, and open-source statistical program. Other common statistical programs, such as SPSS, can have annual subscription fees ranging between $60 to $175.
It is my hope that by reducing the cost of engaging with the course, we will increase student access to and adoption of high-quality statistical methods.
