Case Study
Dr. Diana Lang, C.F.L.E., was an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies until 2022. She received a 2019 Miller Open Education Mini-Grant to develop a new open textbook for HDFS 249, and a second Miller Mini-Grant in 2021 for HDFS 102.
The first book Diana developed was designed to provide readers with access to the most up-to-date, research-based content related to parenting, child-rearing, guidance, theories, and family diversity issues. The majority of similar, “for-profit” books did not contain all of the content that she wished to teach and most new versions lacked up-to-date research. Additionally, these were priced between $80 and $150. Her new OER serves as a foundation for ongoing updates in the ever-changing, global world of families and children; people all over the world can access it and modify it for free.
