Case Study:

Karla Kerkove, MSN, RN, CNE, CCRN, is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Nursing at Iowa State University. Her expertise centers on nursing leadership, nursing professional practice, and the social and structural determinants of health (SDOH/SSDOH), alongside open, accessible curriculum design and active-learning strategies. Kerkove has co-led curriculum development across Iowa State's nursing programs, including the RN-to-BSN redesign, integrating openly licensed resources and open pedagogy throughout entire courses. She has also led accessibility efforts for these curricula, working to ensure that course materials support inclusive learning for all students.

Grounded in clinical practice, Kerkove designs curricula that engage students as co-creators of knowledge rather than passive consumers of content, leading course-wide redesigns that replace commercial textbooks with high-quality OER and authentic, practice-based assignments. Her work weaves nursing leadership, advocacy, and professional practice throughout the curriculum, while advancing accessibility so that open materials are usable by every learner. Drawing on active-learning strategies and AI-enhanced instructional design, she places students' clinical experience at the center of their learning and invites them to apply it directly to the patients and communities they serve. Ultimately, Kerkove aims to prepare current and future nurses to lead within complex health systems, advocate for equitable care, and address the conditions that shape their patients' health — expanding both student potential and community impact.
