Case Study
Dr. Compton led the creation of this open education resource (OER) to support the International Teaching Assistants Program and the English Language Development Program offered by the Center for Communication Excellence, Graduate College. This project, supported by the 2024/2025 Miller Open Education Mini-Grant, adds two new chapters on listening and speaking skills to the first edition of the book and provides enhancements and updates to the existing chapter on pronunciation skills.
The primary goal of this project was to create an OER with practical teaching and learning materials to support international graduate students, teaching assistants, and postdoctoral scholars in their oral communication skills especially in academic settings.
The resource offers a blend of in-class and online interactive activities, practice strategies, and supplementary materials that learners can use both during class, consultations, practice groups, or independently. Each chapter also features a Teacher’s Corner section, providing instructors with additional ideas and adaptable resources for their specific teaching contexts.
