Overview
The purpose of this project was to adapt an existing OER for Consumer Behavior and create content specifically related to fashion and apparel consumer behavior. Outcomes include two new chapters and 14 new sections in addition to minor revisions in various sections in the original OER. The adaptation has undergone peer review by three colleagues, including the original author of the original text, who affirmed both the currency and the relevance of the content for fashion and apparel education.
Reflection
This developed OER is more affordable and is the only apparel consumer behavior textbook available as an OER, as of 2025. The book contains more relatable content and more applicable knowledge to my students' professional careers. Although not officially recorded, I do get more students referencing the textbook while discussing course content with me than before using the OER, indicating that the affordability of the textbook has a positive impact on student usage of textbooks and learning.
My long-term goal is to transition all of my courses to OER, and this project represents the first step in that direction. While I encountered some unforeseen challenges, completing this project has shown me that adapting OER is both feasible and worthwhile. Most importantly, it is rewarding to see that students are actively engaging with the materials and using them to support their learning.
