In 2018, Dr. Haughery received funding for a Mini-Grant project integrating the open textbook, Lessons in Electric Circuits, Volumes I – V, into his course. The next year, Dr. Haughery successfully applied for a second round of funding, which allowed him to adapt and build upon that text.
For his 2019 Miller Mini-Grant project, Dr. Haughery and a graduate student assistant, Steven Olaniba, adaptated the existing open educational resource, into a new open textbook, Applied Industrial Electricity: Theory and Application.
The objectives of adapting the OER were two-fold,
- increase access to course content through a free, open-source textbook, and
- improve student learning through tailoring of the adapted OER to course learning objectives.
You can read more about Dr. Haughery's work with OER in the article, "The Effectiveness of Open Educational Resources to Improve Access and Learning in an Electricity Course," published in The Journal of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (JTMAE).
