This project aimed to create and integrate an Aquatic Toxicology Wikibook as a major course component to the new Aquatic Toxicology course that is offered for the first time in Spring 2019. The course followed an Open Pedagogy approach (learn more about open pedagogy). The class community created the content as well as the format of the Wikibook, such as the cover, title, and table of contents that will be published in the Wikibooks platform.
During the semester, students wrote book chapters focusing on one aspect of Aquatic Toxicology (e.g. Aquatic Pollutants; Experimental Designs in Aquatic Toxicology; Acute and Chronic Toxicity). As part of this process, students received training on open educational resources and the creation of Wikibook chapters. Their chapter development process was monitored and scaffolded with instructor-led review and peer-review activities. The Wikibook project also included the creation and editing of a Class Bibliography on Aquatic Toxicology literature and Class-Generated Glossary on Aquatic Toxicology terms and definitions. Multimedia elements (e.g., videos, illustrations, and images licensed with Creative Commons) were also integrated into the Wikibook content.
This project will continue to be updated as new students take the course and are introduced to its content.
