Opening Pathways to Data Science for Human Sciences Graduates

Contributors

There were three primary components to this project:

  1. The PI evaluated open-source statistics textbooks for use in the course and identified the OpenIntro Statistics text as appropriate for the course.
  2. The PI also incorporated DataCamp tutorials into the course, which are free for students and contained a sequence of courses that were aligned to the OpenIntro text. This allowed students to get hands-on experience engaging in data science projects as part of their coursework.
  3. Finally, they created a series of lecture videos using the OpenIntro resources to explain and illustrate applied statistical concepts for educational research.

As the PI explained in their final report,

"My initial goal for this course was to identify a text book and then creating an R package that facilitated lab time. In the process of evaluating resources, I was able to identify a whole set of resources, including a lab tool, a homework platform, and instructional videos that substantially improved my pedagogy and students’ experiences."
