Support for Developing OER

Whether you are considering customizing an existing OER or creating something new, you want to make sure that your resources are easy to find and use. Below, we've outlined some of the support available for you to easily publish your OER.

Support Available at Iowa State

When developing OER for your course, you have a few options for accessing support through Iowa State. First, you should connect with the Open Education Services Librarian (aelder@iastate.edu) to discuss your plan. Depending on the scope of your work, your project may fall under one of two general workflows supported by the University Library:

Option 1

Publish an original open textbook through the Digital Press. This process is ideal for those developing new open textbook. A simplified workflow for publishing with the Digital Press is provided below:

5-step workflow from proposal to pre-development, development, peer review, and finally production and publication.

For more information about the textbook publishing process with the Digital Press, see Information for Textbook Authors.

Option 2

Develop custom materials with the Open Education Services Librarian. This process is ideal for those remixing existing OER or developing a project that will require regular updates or unique integrations. A simplified workflow for working with the Open Education Services Librarian is provided below:

An iterative, 6-step process including consultation, scoping, development, piloting, review, and finally iteration.

Finding Funding

Each spring, a call for proposals is put out for projects to publish, update, or adopt existing OER. If you are interested in creating a new open educational resource but need additional funding to make that project a reality, see our Apply for a Mini-Grant webpage for more information about our grants.
